Our essential kit-list for a biking or hiking trip

Marcello Meloni Sardinia Blog

Are you going to prepare your hiking or mountain bike backpack for one of our trips or for your own journey in Sardinia?
Here, our essential kit-list for a biking or an hiking trip you cold use to pack you bag.

In addition to the specific equipment for each sport, these are our tips about “universal” equipment to take with you.
Perhaps you will never use many of the stuff we are suggesting but you should never underestimate what can happen during a trip in nature.

The backpack

Whether it’s a bike or trekking backpack, think of something not too bulky because the more space you have, the more maybe you want to fill it.
We recommend a 25 liter volume backpack that allows you to better manage your needs.
Think of a backpack that has already incorporated a waterproof cover.
A one that could provide a good breathability to the back and possibly a water bag.

Nylon cord

It is useful in a thousand ways: to fix something that breaks in the backpack, to create a shelter or in any other use that could necessary in an emergency.
The bulk and weight are minimal so it is better to abound.

Dutch or American tape

It’s a very resistant adhesive tape that can be useful in different ways.
We have always used it to fix the shoes of cyclists and hikers that have broken during our trips in Sardinia.

Powerbank

We suggest you to bring at least a 10000 mh powerbank that we believe is enough for a day out.
It can be used to recharge your mobile phone, camera and any other electronic device you are taking with you during the excursion.

Headlight

It can be useful in the event that for various reasons you find yourself far from civilization at sunset. It can signal your position or simply allows you to walk on the paths once the sunlight has gone away.

Poncho

In the market there are different types of Ponchos that can be useful in case of rain.
We suggest the type that in an emergency turns into a shelter.

Emergency clothing

Always carry a set with spare socks, a fleece to increase your thermal resistance and at least one t-shirt.
Pack all these garments on top of each other, roll them all together and put everything in a plastic bag quite often making sure it is well sealed.
Place the bag in the bottom of the backpack.
You’ll probably never use it but it’s good to have something with you.

K Ration

Energy consumption during a bike or hiking route is high.In addition to your lunch and an adequate supply of water, we suggest you create a bag with an emergency food ration.
A mix of dried fruit, energy bars and some minerals.
Something that will serve you when you have finished your food and power reserves and you still have to finish your trip and return to “civilization”

Emergency thermal blanket

It is something that any biker, cyclist or walker should have in their backpack.
It can help repel heat or keep the body warm following an illness or fall.
With some lanyards and branches, it can also be used to create a small emergency shelter for rain or wind.

Swiss Army knife

The uses in the natural environment are endless.
We advise you to take a small and efficient one.
You can use it to repair your bike or backpack, cut and build an emergency shelter.

Survival kit

You can find several ready-made kits on e-commerce.
You could also take a freezer bag and put inside some paper of a newspaper you have at home, a lighter, a fire light (those for the barbecue or the wood stove) and a emergency bladder.
It is important that this whole kit is sealed and dry.
In the survival kits that you can find online there are other items including a compass and a small chain saw that works by holding the small chain between your fingers.
We also recommend adding some electrician’s cable ties that can be used in different ways.
Naturally, before lighting the fire, you must be careful and evaluate your personal safety and that of the natural environment where you are.

Map

It looks like something outdated but a map of the areas you have to go through is something that should never be missing in the hiker’s baggage because when technology fails to know how to orient makes the difference between arriving at home or in a hotel or getting lost in the woods.
Of course it is also necessary to have a small compass with you that is now available for sale for just a few euros.

First aid kit

On the market you can find well-stocked kits that can be useful in an emergency.
You need disinfectants, plasters, gauze, scissors, tweezers and, if possible, even an instant ice bag that can give relief after bruising.
